The majority of the 54 million population are ethnic Burmese who ranges more than 60 % of the total population and the minorities are such as the Kayin, Kayah, Kachin, Rakhine, Mon, Chin and Shan. There are again numerous tribal groups and the total number of 135 different ethnic groups are recorded and recognized. Chinese and Indian population ranged about 2% of the total population.

Around 85% of the people in Myanmar believe in Buddhism and there are still many animists in the rural area of the country. Most of the mountain tribes from the north and west believe in Christianity and some Myanmar people from Thazi and Pyawbwe area believe in Islamic.
